Janie: The main character
of the story. Janie is a free spirited and adventurous young woman, and as the
story goes on, middle aged woman cannot help but long to find satisfaction in
life by excitement and anything out of routine.
Leafy Crawford: Janie’s biological
mother who abandons Janie at birth.
Nanny: Janie’s Grandmother but really the only guardian/parent
figure Janie has ever had. Nanny is very down to earth and simple, the opposite
of Janie.
Logan Killicks: Janie’s first
husband. He is a simple, honest, hardworking man. The kind of man Nanny always
wanted for Janie. However, his days of youth and adventure are behind him as he
is much older than Janie.
Joe Starks: Also referred to as
Jody. Joe is Janie’s second
husband. Joe is appealing to Janie
because, when they first meet Joe is exciting and youthful. However, his duties
as mayor of Eatonville transform his heart and he becomes a controlling,
demanding and aged man.
Tea Cake: A young and handsome man. Tea cake is the final man in
Janie’s life. He displays a self-confidence and adventurous spirit that draws
Janie to him. He loves Janie for who she is and allows her to be free and
become who she wants to.
Amos Hicks: A man who is interested in Janie from the moment she
sets foot in town. He was expected to begin a relationship with Janie before
she ran off with Tea Cake.
Pheoby Watson: Janie’s best friend. She is
non-judging and always kind to Janie. Janie goes to Pheoby and vents about various
issues throughout the story. Pheoby is protective of Janie.
Sam Watson: Pheoby’s husband. Sam brings a great
deal of insight to the novel. He is an optimist.
Hezekiah Potts: One of the clerks at Jody’s store. He
starts to demonstrate some of Jody’s characteristics after Jody dies.
Mrs. Turner: A fellow worker in the
muck. Mrs. Turner opens up to Janie because they share similar ethnicities,
they are both light skinned. Although Mrs. Turner is half black she believes
white people are the superior race and that all black people are the problem.
She discourages Janie’s relationship with Tea Cake because he is ‘too dark for
her’.
Dr. Simmons: A well-known and respected doctor who
is popular among the muck. He aids Tea Cake at the end of the story but to no
avail.
